Inclusive and empowered reporting requires laying aside harmful narratives of objectivity and neutrality and instead seeking underreported angles and justice-informed reporting – zagging while others zig. In this session, we offer best practices on disrupting toxic narratives perpetuated by the mainstream media, modeling a new approach for journalism that amplifies the people and communities often left out of news coverage.

This session is designed for:

  • Journalists who want to learn more about solutions-based reporting and how to mindfully and thoughtfully cover stories from underreported communities
  • Editors and newsroom leaders who want to learn how to implement editorial initiatives that seek to uplift those affected by traditionally harmful narratives perpetuated by mainstream media
  • Anyone interested in learning how to use storytelling to get at the heart of injustice, activate readers around solutions, and change the current landscape of the journalism industry
